Does Art Make A Difference?

Does art make a difference? This age old question will be answered (kind of) in the blog post below. We will be diving in to this probing question to reveal the amazing benefits of art and how it can or cannot make a difference in the life of others , in my opinion. Keep on reading!

Does art make a difference? can art make a difference? If so, how? Art, by nature, is colorful, fun, bold and full of discovery. You can use art as a tool to - make your space more beautiful, use it as a tool to focus or discover things about yourself. Art has so many dimensions and can provoke many emotions from the viewer, or not! Most of the time it does, and sometimes it can even be negative.

Here in Cleveland, there was a very debatable piece of art that was installed above a very well-known gallery 78th street studios. The artist , Dana Depew created a larger than life text font style piece that read "Your Art Sucks" above the entry way. Some people thought it was funny and that it was intended to be comical. Others thought it was just plain rude. Either way, this art piece was causing a buzz all over the internet and the city. It started a conversation much bigger than the piece its self and even helped the Cleveland art scene move in to a different direction. This piece was centered around the CAN Triennial. Many artists felt that they were largely overlooked and felt that the artists chosen for the CAN show were chosen due to politics. CAN promised to do better next year and to disqualify any and all artists that shown this year for the next Triennial, to make room for new artists.

This was just one example close to home that shows that art can in fact make a difference. Other ways include how YOU feel while you're creating. Or how a student feels while they create.

While art can't move mountains, it CAN provoke emotion, to thought and into action!
